Questions about skins, cases and prices

Are CS2 skins the same as CSGO skins?

Effectively yes. Counter-Strike 2 inherited the entire CS:GO inventory, so every csgo skin carried over and is now a cs2 skin, re-rendered on the Source 2 engine. The names, rarity tiers and wear conditions stayed the same, which is why the two terms are used interchangeably across our guides. See the CS2 skins guide and the CSGO skins guide for the full breakdown.

How are CS2 skin prices decided?

Skin prices come from three interacting forces: rarity, wear condition and demand. A rare Covert finish with a low float and a popular pattern sits at the expensive end, while a common design in Battle-Scarred condition is cheap. Because supply and demand shift constantly, no price is fixed, so any figure you see should be treated as a snapshot rather than a guarantee. Our skin market page explains the economics in more depth.

What is a CS2 case?

A cs2 case, or weapon case, is a sealed container that holds a fixed set of skins at different rarity tiers plus a rare chance at a knife or gloves. Opening a case requires a matching key. Each case is essentially a themed collection, and its contents and drop odds are set when the case is released. Read the CS2 cases guide to see how containers are structured.

Why do case prices vary so much?

Case prices depend on age, supply and whether the case is still dropping in game. Older cases that no longer drop, or that contain sought-after knives, tend to cost more, while current cases stay cheap because millions circulate. Our case prices page explains the typical bands in more detail.

What does float value mean?

Float value is a hidden number from 0 to 1 that sets a skin's exact wear. A float near 0 looks almost pristine, and a float near 1 shows heavy scratching and fading. Because a single design can exist across all five wear conditions, float has a strong effect on both appearance and price.

How does case opening work?

In the game client you select a case, use a matching key and receive one randomly drawn item from that case according to fixed published odds. The result is weighted by rarity, so common items appear often and knives or gloves are very rare. Our case opening guide walks through the mechanics without encouraging spending.
